Galley & Kitchen Cleaning for Cruise Ships & Passenger Vessels

TR19-standard extraction cleaning for commercial galleys on passenger ferries, cruise ships, and passenger vessels. Scheduled around port calls and dry dock periods, BESCA VHR accredited with full compliance documentation.

Galley extraction systems carry the same fire risk as shore-based commercial kitchens, and the consequences on a passenger vessel are more severe

A grease fire in a commercial galley is dangerous anywhere. On a passenger vessel at sea, the risks to life and the vessel are compounded. Regular extraction cleaning to TR19 standard with documented grease deposit readings is essential for flag state compliance, P&I club insurance, and the safety of everyone on board.

Why Passenger Vessel Operators Choose Hy5

20 years of experience in specialist cleaning environments, with the accreditations vessel operators require.

BESCA VHR

BESCA VHR: The Benchmark for Extraction Cleaning

Our BESCA VHR accreditation is the recognised standard for TR19 extraction cleaning documentation. The compliance reports and certificates we issue mirror what shore-based insurers and inspectors require, adapted for the galley context and the vessel operator's documentation needs.

CHAS Elite

CHAS Elite: Specialist Environment Approval

CHAS Elite is the highest level of contractor H&S pre-qualification in the UK. Working aboard a vessel requires additional awareness of confined spaces, vessel safety procedures, and port security. Our CHAS Elite accreditation demonstrates the management systems to handle specialist access environments safely.

Port Call & Dry Dock Scheduling

We work with the operational reality of passenger vessels. Cleaning is scheduled around port calls, turnarounds, or planned dry dock periods. We coordinate with your operations team well in advance and complete all work within your available window.

What's Different About Galley Cleaning on Passenger Vessels

Commercial galleys on passenger ferries and cruise ships operate in high-volume, confined spaces, often with extended operating hours, heavy frying, and limited time ashore for maintenance. The extraction systems accumulate grease at least as quickly as shore-based kitchens, and the fire risk in an enclosed vessel environment is arguably greater.

Scheduling is the primary constraint. Cleaning must happen during a port call, during a turnaround between sailings, or during a planned dry dock period. We work with your operations team to establish a cleaning window in advance, mobilise quickly, and complete all work before departure.

For vessels based in or regularly calling at Northwest ports, including Heysham (Isle of Man and Belfast services) and Merseyside, Hy5 is ideally positioned. We can also travel to other ports where a planned schedule makes mobilisation worthwhile.

New-build and refit vessels

We also carry out galley extraction cleaning on new-build and refit vessels during fitting-out, particularly relevant for vessels under construction or refit in the Barrow-in-Furness and Merseyside areas. Galley systems need a clean and documented sign-off before handover.

"I can actually hear the kitchen extract system working and the extract above the dishwash nearly pulled the sheet of blue roll out my hand when I was showing the management team how effective the clean was! The lads grafted the entire time, and the job has made a huge difference to the guys working in the kitchen. I am over the moon with the results!"

Frequently Asked Questions: Passenger Vessels

Does TR19 apply to galley extraction systems on passenger vessels?
TR19 is a BESA standard written for land-based commercial kitchens, but its core principles (grease deposit measurement, cleaning standards, documentation, and frequency) apply equally to galley extraction systems on passenger vessels. Many vessel operators and P&I clubs require TR19-standard cleaning documentation for galley extraction systems as evidence of fire risk management. We carry out galley cleans to TR19 standard and issue documentation in the same format.
How do you schedule cleaning around our sailing timetable?
We coordinate with your operations or shore management team well in advance. For regular service ferries, we identify a port call or turnaround window that gives us sufficient time to complete the clean. For cruise ships, this is typically a longer port stay or a dry dock period. We will always confirm access, timing, and vessel procedures before mobilising.
Can you work on vessels at Heysham, Merseyside, or Barrow?
Yes. We are ideally positioned to serve vessels at Heysham (Isle of Man Steam Packet and Stena Line routes), Merseyside, and vessels being built or fitted out in Barrow-in-Furness. For other ports, call us to discuss travel feasibility and cost. For a planned dry dock or refit, mobilisation to other UK ports is often worthwhile.
Do you carry out galley cleaning on new-build or refit vessels?
Yes. We carry out galley extraction cleaning during the fitting-out stage of new builds and during refit programmes, particularly for vessels in the Barrow-in-Furness area. We provide a full sign-off report with grease deposit readings and photographic evidence suitable for inclusion in handover documentation.
